A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NURSE.Do you nurse your teddy bear and dolls when they are sick? Let's spend a day with Nurse Renee Donovan and find out what she does. She works at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Her patients need more than cough syrup or a few days' rest at home to get well. "The best part is when they feel better," Nurse Donovan said, "and I know that I've had a part in it!" 6:45 A.M. Nurse Donovan's day begins at the nurses' locker room. 7:00 A.M. Nurse Donovan finds out about the kids she will care for during her eight-hour shift. She talks with the night nurse. 8:00 A.M. (and again at noon) Time to check vital signs! Jose Sanchez, six, gets checked from head to toe--with a tickle! 9:00 A.M. (and again at noon, 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.) Nurse Donovan gives her patients their medications. 9:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. After breakfast and morning care comes a game of checkers. Luke Cole, 10, makes his move! 10:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Nurse Donovan helps doctors during their "rounds" or "patient visits." 12:30 P.M. Before lunch, Nurse Donovan makes sure that someone will care for her patients and knows where she is. 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Nurse Donovan writes down her patients' vital signs and the doctors' orders that were carried out. Nurse Donovan meets with her nursing team leader and the nurse who will take care of her patients during the next shift. Would you like to be a nurse? You must attend nursing school and pass a special test. |
