A DAY FOR THE BOOKS.

Byline: Steve Mims The Register-Guard

BLUE RIVER - Dillon Bellmore glanced at the 2004 National High School Sports Record Book, which should include his name in next year's edition.

"That's pretty cool," the McKenzie senior said. "It's amazing; I never thought I'd score eight touchdowns in a game."

Bellmore's eight-touchdown performance in McKenzie's 76-40 playoff win over Wallowa on Saturday is a single-game state record for eight-man football Eight-man football is a type of American football, generally played by small high schools. Rules and formations vary greatly among states and even among different organizations, but the one constant is eight players from each team on the field at one time, as opposed to eleven-man  and put Bellmore into a tie for 10th place nationally, according to according to

Three players have scored 10 touchdowns in an eight-man game, six have scored nine touchdowns, and Bellmore is the eighth to score eight touchdowns in a game.

"I didn't really realize what happened until the end of the game and then the next morning when I read the paper," Bellmore said. "It was like, `Wow. Eight touchdowns, 333 yards. Geez geez

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Bellmore rushed for 953 yards and 12 touchdowns during the first 10 games of the season while splitting time in the backfield with Forrest King.

Bellmore got most of the work against Wallowa and rushed 40 times for 333 yards. He scored one touchdown in the first quarter, two in the second quarter, and one in the third quarter before adding four scores in a 38-point fourth quarter for McKenzie.

"Once he started to get things rolling it became a natural fit to keep giving him the ball," McKenzie coach Rick Gardner said.

"It becomes easy as a coach when you give a kid the ball and he gets six or seven yards each time. Then that turns into 15 and 20 yards each time."

Bellmore's four touchdowns in the fourth quarter were on runs of 26, 47, 28 and 30 yards. He had 180 yards on 11 carries in the final quarter.

"It didn't dawn on me honestly until the eighth one how many times he had been in the end zone," Gardner said. "We found a play that was working and figured we'd keep giving it to him. It seemed like each time he finished a run he was in the end zone."

Added Bellmore: "I don't remember a lot of the game. I guess I was just in a zone."

Bellmore is part of a versatile backfield that also includes King and quarterback Ryan Rux, who have both run for more than 500 yards this season.

"That helps a lot," Bellmore said. "Forrest and I switch every other play so that helps cool us down a bit. At the beginning of the year I was running the ball a lot and getting tired. Coach decided to switch us, and I'm glad he did that."

King had 11 carries for 43 yards against Wallowa, while Rux rushed for 55 yards and threw two long touchdown passes.

"Teams have to be able to defend all three of those guys and if they can't, it will cause problems," Gardner said. "If they are all playing well, they are tough to stop and fortunately for us, those three have caught fire at the right time. We had games where we struggled early in the season, but now we are playing as well as we have all season."

McKenzie will have a chance to avenge its first loss of the season Saturday against South Wasco County.

The Redsides, who defeated the Eagles 32-24 at the Eight Man Classic on Sept. 4 in Dufur, feature junior running back Stephen Kresse, who has six touchdowns in two playoff victories.

"Kresse has got great speed and he is a tough runner," Gardner said. "He is a kid we have to contain. We had a tough time bringing him down last time."

Kresse rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns against McKenzie.

"They had a quick guy that ran on the outside against us," said Bellmore, a second-team all-league defensive back. "We can stop him though. That was our first game. Both teams were still learning and we've stepped it up a lot since then."

McKenzie, which lost to Powers 42-24 in last year's semifinal, is trying to reach the state final for the first time since it won the 1969 state title. The 1A championship game is Dec. 10 at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. .

"It is nice to get another opportunity to play South Wasco County and it is tough to beat somebody twice in one season, so this time we hope to come through and get the job done," Gardner said. "South Wasco County is a young team with mostly sophomores and juniors, so we feel like this is their first time on this stage and hopefully we have the experience and can use it to our advantage."

Bellmore, who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown against South Wasco County, has come up big during his third postseason with the Eagles.
