A DAY FOR HEROES WORKERS HONORED FOR RESPONSE.

Byline: Naush Boghossian Staff Writer

GLENDALE - Costco employee Karen Mendoza was a little stunned by the loud cheers and applause that greeted her Wednesday when she received a certificate recognizing her role in helping victims of the deadly Metrolink derailment derailment /de·rail·ment/ (de-ral´ment) disordered thought or speech characteristic of schizophrenia and marked by constant jumping from one topic to another before the first is fully realized. .

Mendoza and more than a dozen other Costco employees were thanked for rushing to the aid of those hurt in the crash of two commuter trains near the store. Eleven people died and nearly 200 were hurt in the state's deadliest rail disaster.

``It's almost hard to believe, one week later on this beautiful sunshiny day, that we had a horrific tragedy occur here,'' Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams said. ``This incident could have been far worse had people not immediately responded.''

But during the recognition ceremony held near the store, Mendoza downplayed the workers' role.

``It still doesn't make sense to me that we're being treated so great for doing acts of basic humanitarianism hu·man·i·tar·i·an·ism

Authorities said the crash was caused by a deranged de·range

``This is a story of individual choice and human instinct. You defied whatever the dangers were and you brought solace to people.''

Leesa Zavala, the wife of Costco employee Mark Zavala, said she's had to force him to accept accolades for walking through the diesel-drenched crash site to help others.

``I keep telling him he did something amazing,'' she said. ``He is the most beautiful person and he did something totally unselfishly. He's truly an inspiration and I'm so proud of him.''

Zavala's 9-year-old daughter, Victoria, who was allowed to skip school in order to watch others honor her father, beamed with pride.

``I think he's the greatest hero ever,'' she said.
