Being a good father runs much deeper than that.

lose the love of your life after 56 years of marriage without it creating a tremendous hole in your heart.

It's about respect, and total commitment to your family. About a lot of things worth much more than just money and who has the most toys, Booth says - this being a good father.

I've chosen this 82-year-old West Hills man to put a face on Father's Day this year because I think he's exactly the kind of man Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge had in mind back in 1916 and 1924, respectively, when they made Father's Day a holiday and national observance.

Rock-solid. A man who served his country in war, then came home to marry, start a career, and raise a family that has stayed close over the years.

A man you can now find in retirement standing on the same street corner five mornings and afternoons a week during the last 13 school years, making sure the kids going to Welby Way Elementary School elementary school: see school.  in West Hills make it home safely.

A couple of them the crossing guard knows real well - they're his great- grandkids, Ryan and Kaitlin.

``How you doing today, grandpa?'' they both asked Thursday, waiting for their great-grandfather to stop traffic at Vanowen Street and Lederer Avenue, and escort them and their friends safely across the busy street.

Some days, Linda Romero, Jim's daughter stops by to visit her dad on this corner and then walk her grandkids home.

Maybe it's an age thing, the 56-year-old woman says, but the older she gets the more she appreciates her father and what he has meant to his family, especially in times of tragedy.

``Five years ago, my husband had a heart attack and died, leaving me a widow at 51,'' Linda says. ``I couldn't have made it through that time without dad.

``He was at the house every day fixing what needed fixing, planting flowers, pruning pruning, the horticultural practice of cutting away an unwanted, unnecessary, or undesirable plant part, used most often on trees, shrubs, hedges, and woody vines.  the roses and just holding my hand to get me through the pain.

``He became both grandfather and father to my kids, and now we've become travel partners, going on vacations together.

``If you could hold up one person as a role model for what a wonderful, caring father should be, it would be my dad,'' she said.

And now, on Father's Day, it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  for Jim Booth's family to gather around the man who has always been there for them, and be there for him - help him ease the pain and loneliness of losing his wife, Helen, to a stroke last month.

``I miss her so much. She was a wonderful wife and mother, and the real rock of this family,'' he says.

As far as being a good father, there is no real secret, Jim says. You just try to be a loving person to everyone in your family, and be there when anyone needs you to lean on.

And if that means you take a job as a crossing guard at your grandkids' and great-grandkids' elementary school the last 13 years to see them for a few minutes every day, well, that's what a good father does.

Because when all is said and done, it's not about money or who dies with the most toys.

It's about love, Jim Booth says. Pure and simple.
