Winchester is one of those rare authors who can read his books successfully. His appealing cultured British voice, his successful rendition of accents and tones of voice, and his enthusiasm and respect for his subject make for compelling listening.

The "crack" is the 750-mile San Andreas Fault San Andreas fault, great fracture (see fault) of the earth's crust in California. It is the principal fault of an intricate network of faults extending more than 600 mi (965 km) from NW California to the Gulf of California.  that runs through California and was at the heart of the San Francisco earthquake San Francisco earthquake

disaster claiming many lives and most of city (1906). [Am. Hist.: Jameson, 443–444]

of 1906. No dry dusty tome this, as we are taken back through eons to the Earth's beginnings. Interspersed throughout is the earthquake itself, with word pictures that have the feel of eyewitness An individual who was present during an event and is called by a party in a lawsuit to testify as to what he or she observed.

The state and Federal Rules of Evidence, which govern the admissibility of evidence in civil actions and criminal proceedings, impose requirements
accounts, as indeed some of them are. But Winchester also seems to stand with his back to the edge of the world watching Enrico Caruso and John Barrymore deal with the quake as well as less-famous mayors, generals, firefighters, writers, and ordinary citizens. Listeners might miss the maps and illustrations of the printed version; but here they get an interesting interview with the author. Anyone interested in earthquakes, geology, California history, the author's other books, and just plain good listening will enjoy this.
