Matthew Hervey, a British regimental commander, is assigned to do battle in the jungles of Burma in 1819, five years after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The novel's narrative is slow-moving and detailed. It begins in Italy, where Hervey vacations with his sister and baby daughter while mourning his much-loved wife. Conscious of the cultural quirks of the day, the author moves through Hervey's reentry reentry n. taking back possession and going into real property which one owns, particularly when a tenant has failed to pay rent or has abandoned the property, or possession has been restored to the owner by judgment in an unlawful detainer lawsuit.  to the army, his process of finding recruits and horses for his regiment, the details of training his men, incessant political maneuvering, and the colonial politics of the day. The listener is caught up in wait times that would be unacceptable today, the threats to health more dangerous than battle, the difficulty of traversing alien terrain (and culture), and the bloody fighting. Throughout, attention to forms, elaborate protocols, physical appearance, and questions of honor often overshadow o·ver·shad·ow

Graham's voice is clear and full with a tone of formality and care in speaking that fits the manner of the times. Not for someone who likes to cut to the chase, but a treat for the reader who enjoys intimately sharing the milieu mi·lieu
