A CSUN MARRIAGE MADE LATE, BUT IN HEAVEN.Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer Anthony Ramos stopped by coach Ron Ponciano's office last week with the lone objective being to convey an expression of gratitude. It was a simple thank you for allowing Ramos, a creative and jitterbugging wide receiver, to attend Cal State Northridge after nearly pulling out of his national letter of intent. It was heartfelt by all involved. Then he went out and said thanks in another way, adding a dimension to CSUN's already-explosive offense via the run, pass and catch. And after playing sparingly spar·ing adj. 1. Given to or marked by prudence and restraint in the use of material resources. 2. Deficient or limited in quantity, fullness, or extent. 3. Forbearing; lenient. in the opener against Boise State, Ramos' versatility has moved him to the forefront of the offense heading into today's nonconference game against Southern Utah at North Campus Stadium. ``I love doing stuff for him. It's fun,'' Matadors offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during Rob Phenicie said. ``Because of his speed and versatility, there's so much you can do.'' That was evident last weekend in CSUN's 38-35 win against Eastern Washington
He will line up in the slot, sometimes in the backfield and other times wide. All the while providing opposing defensive coordinators with large headaches. ``One of the things I liked about here was the offense Northridge runs,'' Ramos said. ``It's that wide-open spread attack, and I was talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to" lecture, speech rebuke, reprehension, reprimand, reproof, reproval - an act or expression of criticism and censure; "he had to Coach (Phenicie) and he was telling me they would give me an opportunity to do some different things. That caught my attention.'' Ramos was a quarterback at Santa Barbara City College As of 2004, total enrollment of full-time and part-time students reached 17,000. It is currently led by President John Romo, who will be retiring at the end of Spring 2008 after seven years with the institution. , but his height made four-year school recruiters look at him in a different way. At 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, even Ramos figured he was too small to play quarterback. So he went the wide receiver way, which he hadn't played since his sophomore season at Dos Pueblos High. With a major in quarterbacking and a minor in receiving, it's worked out nicely. Ramos' arrival on the CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge scene coincided with Eric Carpenter's injury at Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. . Phenicie said he still planned to work Ramos into the offense, but Carpenter's ankle fracture two weeks ago brought it on more rapidly. ``I'm still getting back into the swing of running routes and breaking off routes,'' said Ramos, who has six catches in the last two games. ``I think they want me to get the ball because I can do things after I get it.'' In short, Ramos is slippery. In fact, it's so hard to keep hold of him that it took a second lunge from the coaching staff to keep him at CSUN. Ramos signed his national letter of intent to attend CSUN during the offseason, but between the ink drying and the opening of training camp, some people close to Ramos told him he was making the wrong move. They told him CSUN wouldn't be right for him, and that he should go to a Division I-A school. So he investigated going to Valley College for a year, before CSUN made another push at getting him to follow through on his commitment. ``I could have done what most other coaches would have done and said, `Hey, you Hey, You is the debut EP of Japanese band Mono. don't want to be here, then go,' but we actually worked hard getting him to stay with us,'' Ponciano said. ``It wasn't that easy to get him, and we're tickled we did get him.
