Before Kennedy won it, the story was the conundrum that is Howie Kendrick Howard Joseph (Howie) Kendrick (born July 12, 1983 in Jacksonville, Florida) is an American Major League Baseball second baseman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He bats and throws right-handed. Kendrick Attended West Nassau High School where he played baseball. .

Kendrick always has been labeled as a can't-miss hitter, the kind of offensive player a team refuses to trade no matter the price. Kendrick's glove, on the other hand, has always been a work in progress. Learning first base on the job in the major leagues hasn't helped that view.

In one inning, Kendrick showed it all. While playing first base in the top of the seventh he couldn't get to a ball to his right as it deflected into right field to allow the tying run to score.

In the eighth inning, with the Angels threatening, the Orioles got the play they needed at first base. His leadoff double in the ninth inning was wasted, though.

Angels starter John Lackey was in line for the victory through six innings before he lost and then regained the chance in the seventh.

Lackey was clinging to a 1-0 lead in the seventh when he gave up a leadoff double to Ramon Hernandez.

But Hernandez was erased when Brandon Fahey's sacrifice bunt was fielded by Lackey, who threw to third base in time to retire the lead runner. A single by Brian Roberts pit runners on first and second when Melvin Mora nearly hit into an inning-ending double play.

Rookie Nick Markakis then hit a bouncing ball to Kendrick's right that he was unable to grab. The deflected ball also rolled past a diving Adam Kennedy at second base but the run would have scored anyway.

Kendrick tried to make up for things the best way he knew how, by using his bat. After his single, Kennedy tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt but he fouled it to the backstop. On the next pitch, he pulled a ball into right field for a single. After Curtis Pride struck out, Molina came through with his fly ball to medium right field and Kendrick dived home with the run.

Lackey gave up one run on nine hits in seven innings with a walk and five strikeouts. He ultimately lost his chance at victory right after he was removed.

Reliever Scot Shields gave up a double to Jay Gibbons to lead off the eighth. Chone Figgins made a diving catch in left for the first out but an infield single by David Newhan put runners at the corners.

Hernandez drove in the tying run with a fly ball to deep center. Vladimir Guerrero nearly put the Angels back into the lead in the eighth inning but his long fly ball to left field was caught against the wall by Fahey.
