What do you want for Christmas, dad? my kids ask.

Not much, I tell them. Nothing they can buy. Just a couple of more hours with some old friends and memories.

I want to walk into my first newspaper city room again on deadline and soak it all in - the utter madness, noise and chaos of it all coming together in some magical way to produce tomorrow's newspaper - 365 days a year.

I want to turn a corner some night and see some dirty-faced kid hawking an extra edition on the street again.
