The first-graders in Kathie Ferkin's class had already belted out old-time favorites Another term for bookmarks, which was popularized by Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. ``It's something I've always wanted to do,'' Ferkin, a collector of antiques and old sheet music, said of the extended sing-along. ``I've always loved music. I could probably sing a song about any subject.''

With every lesson she teaches her young pupils, Ferkin tries to incorporate a song that will help them remember what they've learned. Parents approve of her approach.

``I really think music should be a part of the curriculum,'' said Tamara Gorin. Gorin and her husband, Alex, were spending the afternoon watching their 6-1/2-year-old daughter Susan participate in the sing-along.

``We'd never miss this. Ms. Ferkin does a terrific job,'' she said.

Her husband added: ``I can't believe they remember all the words.''

Accompanied by Ferkin on a tabletop keyboard, the youngsters began a segment on animals.

Throughout the program, each youngster got a chance to tell a little something about a selection or to take part in a solo.

``I really believe when you put on a program, every child should take part in the whole program,'' Ferkin said. ``Music is something everyone can do.''
