A CAVALIER FAMILY KHALIL PADEN BENEFITS FROM CLEVELAND'S `SPOTTER' -- HIS FATHER.Byline: SEAN n. 1. A seine. See Seine. CEGLINSKY Staff Writer Khalil Paden essentially grew up on the football field at Cleveland High, toiling around the facilities in Reseda during his formative days as a youth while his father, Bill, coached the Cavaliers in the mid-to-late 1990s. On game days, Bill Paden would devise a game plan designed around stopping the opposing quarterback or running back while son typically found a way to keep himself busy, usually with a football off to the side, carefully making sure not to disturb the coaches' preparation. scenario played out well as Bill and the Cavaliers enjoyed success and competed for West Valley League titles. Things have changed over the years, yet others remain the same. Khalil is still out on that same field, only this time as the star quarterback for Cleveland. Bill is around too, in his 13thyear as a social studies and magnet teacher at the school, often times serving as a spotter for the Cavaliers -- an assistant coach without the official title. ``I remember being young, in elementary school elementary school: see school. Mark blatant advertising for , using . ,'' Khalil said. ``Those were fun times. ``Having my dad around now, even though he's not my coach, is good. We break down game film together and he gives me tips and advice. The good thing is, I don't have to worry about getting into any arguments with him about the plays.'' ``I wouldn't be the player I am today without him.'' Bill was also the track and field coach at Cleveland for nine years but chose to retire from all his responsibilities within the athletic arena in 2001, when Khalil and his other son, Ahmad, began high school. Ahmad played for the Cavaliers for twoseasons, graduated last year and is currently at San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. State, where he plans to walk on to the football team next season. ``It was time for someone else to coach my kids,'' Bill said. ``Besides, I like being a parent right now. There's no pressure like there was when I was a coach.'' Khalil is having an all-around solid year statistically, although the Cavaliers (1-6 overall, 0-2 West Valley) have struggled heading into Friday's league game against Taft of Woodland Hills (3-4, 1-1). The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior has completed 30 of 71 passes for 731 yards and four touchdowns and has been effective running the ball, gaining 407 yards on 51carries with six touchdowns. ``Khalil is a playmaker play·mak·er n. A player in a sport with goals, such as a guard in basketball, who initiates offensive plays. play ,'' said Cleveland coach Derrick Hill, in his second year. ``He's one of those kids that gives you a chance to win every time he's out there on the field. When he touches the ball, you hold your breath. You never know when he's going to take off and make a big play.'' He opened some eyes with a breakout effort Sept. 29 against Sylmar, throwing for 234 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for 146 and a pair of scores, clinching the 28-27 victory over the Spartans on a 5-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining. The performance was particularly impressive, considering Khalil played receiver and defensive back as a junior for the Cavaliers and is in his first season underneath center, due in large part to his sheer athleticism. His steady improvement is a direct result of the patience exhibited by Hill and the rest of the coaching staff, not excluding the Cavaliers' spotter. ``When I first came to Cleveland, everyone told me about Bill and his history with the program. We connected right away and he's been a great ally,'' Hill said. ``He's a mentor to everyone in this program and on campus. He's respected around here.'' Khalil is projected as a receiver at the next level and several Pac-10 programs, as well as Utah and Nevada Reno, have expressed interest. No official offers have been made as of yet. He's showing some promise. As a parent, that's what it's all about. Sitting back and relaxing and watching your kids play.'' sean.ceglinsky@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 Q&A ... You guys seem to be in the same situation as last season, when you started off slow by Loyola standards. Is it easier to motivate the team with the way you turned it around last year? I think so. Last year was a weird year. We started off 5-1, then struggled, then really turned it on again. We've struggled again this year and lost to teams we shouldn't have, but we've also beat some good teams. We're slowly starting to figure things out, and we expect to contend for the league title. We can expect you guys to turn it around again this year, right? Absolutely. These guys definitely made a believer out of me last year. I think we can play with anybody on any given Friday. It's just all about playing with that confidence, and taking control of the game from the opening kick. You guys had to win a coin flip to even make it into the playoffs last year. How do you explain dominating in the playoffs after that? The passing game wasn't a big priority when I took over last year. The team had to learn an entirely new way of doing things, and it showed at first. But I really hold it dear to my heart that the team never lost focus, and kept their faith in me. What would a victory over league-favorite Notre Dame mean for the Loyola program? We still have our sights set on winning league, so it would be big. Former champions or section finalists relegated to the middle of the pack in their divisions. Their egos could be bruised, their reputations tarnished. Don't tell that to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks or Hart of Newhall, the opponents tonight for Loyola of Los Angeles and Valencia. The records in these Serra and Foothill league matchups indicate Notre Dame and Hart should emerge with convincing, if not lopsided, victories. But that's what makes Loyola and Valencia so dangerous. Notre Dame (7-0) is the top-ranked team in Southern Section Pac-5 Division and No. 4 in Cal-Hi Sports' state poll. The Knights have won 41 of their past 42 games, the only loss coming in last year's Div. III final to Dominguez of Compton. Although Loyola (4-3) is the defending Div. A Sept. 30 victory over Dominguez was followed by a 28-point loss Oct. 6 to Hart. Last week, Loyola trailed Alemany of Mission Hills 17-13, before rallying with the game's final 17 points.
