A CALIFORNIA INSTITUTION; OIL MUSEUM IN SANTA PAULA TO GET NAME CHANGE.

Byline: Lisa Mascaro Staff Writer

What's in a name? Officials say potentially the chance to reach a broader audience and thousands of dollars in annual funding to keep a museum running strong.

The Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  Union Oil Museum will be no more under a name change approved by the City Council this week that reinstates the original name of the 49-year-old institution: the California Oil Museum.

The museum, opened in 1950 by the Union Oil Co., provides a history of the oil industry, including permanent exhibits on the industry.

The name has been changed twice before - once in 1990 to Unocal Oil Museum and again in 1993 to the Santa Paula Union Oil Museum, when the city took over operations from the company.

Officials said the name potentially prevented would-be donors - particularly other oil companies and their employees - from contributing.

Ealier this year, a proposal to secure state money for the museum failed to win approval in Sacramento, said officials, who believe the new name could lead to stronger support from the state.

The name change to California Oil Museum received widespread support across the community, with letters in favor of upon the side of; favorable to; for the advantage of.
