A Bright Spot in Retail: National Association of College Stores Reports Increased Fall Sales; ``Comfort Items'' Popular on Campus Following September 11.

Business Editors

OBERLIN, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 2001

In contrast to the losses reported by main street retailers this fall, college stores are experiencing strong growth.

A survey of 238 college stores released this week by the National Association of College Stores, indicates that 83 percent of college stores experienced increased sales compared to last fall, with nearly 60 percent of the stores reporting an increase of 5 percent or more.

Apparel items, particularly hooded sweatshirts, and brightly colored student supplies such as gel pens were leading product categories this fall, with 69 percent and 58 percent of stores reporting robust sales in these categories respectively. While nearly 82 percent of college stores noted additional sales of textbooks, some respondents (3.4%) listed textbooks as particular "hot sellers," a possible rebound from students purchasing from Internet discounters in recent years.

Patriotic items were quite popular on campus following September 11. In a possible response to the impact of world events "comfort items" such as stuffed animals
