Their mother has gone off on one of her "vacations," and their older sister has decided to emigrate, leaving them in the grudging care of an aunt. Weeks pass, and no one comes for them. Harley is in trouble constantly. When the truth about the Matts' bad reputation is finally revealed, Carl reacts with dignity, generosity, and industry, earning the respect and affection of those wronged by his grandfather.

Marnika does a superb job with his semi-voiced reading of this affecting, bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  YA novel set in Australia, bringing the variety of characters brilliantly to life. The author's portrayals of the teenager Carl, ashamed of his size and feeling shunned by his peers, and the furious little Harley, so lacking in love and direction, are painfully universal. The message is that with the help of decent people life can change greatly for the better. Pat Dole, Richmond, VA
