Founded as an aircraft engine manufacturer in 1916, the company assumed the name Bayerische Motoren Werke and became known for its high-speed motorcycles in the 1920s. 7-Series is getting a new diesel engine that's more powerful than any previous unit. It's a 3.0-litre twin turbo six-cylinder with 306bhp that can shove the 7 to 155mph and from 0-62mph in 6.3sec. Best of all, it returns a combined figure of 40.9mpg - probably mid 30s in the real world. In BMW's language the new engine is in the 740d. Prices will be announced nearer the September launch. THE new BMW 316d ES is the most economical 3-Series yet. It'll manage 62.8mpg on the combined cycle A combined cycle is characteristic of a power producing engine or plant that employs more than one thermodynamic cycle. Heat engines are only able to use a portion of the energy their fuel generates (usually less than 50%). The remaining heat from combustion is generally wasted. and emits just 118g/km which means it will be cheap to tax. |
