Aware of growing public concern about the "road miles" of food, Beacon Foods tries wherever possible to source raw materials locally or from within the UK. Ethical questionnaires are sent to all suppliers to gauge their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.

Underlining its green credentials, the company has installed new air filtration and extraction equipment above processing machinery to improve working conditions for employees and improve the quality of air being emitted from the plant.

An electronic temperature monitoring system has been installed to alert managers immediately of any faults with fridges or freezers, thereby improving efficiency and saving energy.

The company is now assessing alternative fuels for its fleet of 11 delivery vehicles, which each travel around 120,000 miles a year, from Plymouth to Scotland.
