A BOOST FOR SCHOOLS EASTSIDE DISTRICT INCREASING DEVELOPER FEES NEARLY 21%.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Reflecting a housing boom and growth in enrollment, Eastside Union School District has approved a double-digit increase in developer fees to help pay for classroom construction.

Eastside raised its developer fees nearly 21 percent to $2.48 per square foot of floor space in residential development.

``We do it every year because it costs more money to build schools. Raw materials, labor and land have gone up,'' Superintendent Greg Riccio said.

The average-size home in the district is about 2,000 square feet, resulting in fees of $4,960 per house.

``Our demographic studies are showing we are getting not quite one child per house,'' Riccio said.

The money raised from developer fees will help pay to build schools, acquire land and provide infrastructure, Riccio said.

The four-school district has nearly 2,900 pupils, up by more than 100 youngsters from the previous year. A fifth school, Columbia Elementary, is under construction.
