A BOOST FOR BELL RINGERS.

Byline: DENNIS McCARTHY Dennis McCarthy may refer to:
  • Dennis McCarthy (composer), (born 1945), an American composer
  • Dennis McCarthy (congressman), (19th century) Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1885
  • Dennis McCarthy MBE (radio presenter), British radio presenter

The Academy Award-winning actor worried that some of the lines in a small movie he had made called ``Dummy'' might offend Dixie's kids, so he took her aside outside the movie theater last month, and asked her the question she's been hearing most of her life.

``I'm called 'mentally retarded' in a few scenes. Do you think it will hurt their feelings or offend them?'' Best Actor winner Adrien Brody Adrien Brody (born April 14, 1973) is an American actor. He received widespread recognition when he was cast as the lead in Roman Polanski's The Pianist (2002). The role won him an Academy Award for Best Actor, the youngest actor ever to win the award.  asked Dixie Hendrickson, founder of Activities for Retarded re·tard·ed

She smiled and assured the star of the movie ``The Pianist'' that hearing those words wouldn't hurt her kids.

They've heard plenty worse growing up, Dixie said. And all it's done is make them stronger, and more talented as adults.

The proof was right there on her desk calendar. Her ARC Bell Ringers were booked to perform every day through Christmas Eve.

If you want to call them something, call them talented and successful.

Brody was filming a movie in Philadelphia on Monday and couldn't be reached. But whenever he's in Los Angeles for a few days, you can usually catch him over at ARC, just hanging, Dixie says.

``He just walked in one day a few months ago, and kind of adopted us,'' she said Monday, on her way down with her Bell Ringers to perform in some of the offices at City Hall.

Dixie's fighting City Hall to maintain ARC's funding next year, and a few Christmas carols A Christmas carol is a carol whose lyrics center on the theme of Christmas or that has become associated with the Christmas season even though its lyrics may not specifically refer to Christmas. Both types of Christmas carols are included in this list.  while she twists some arms couldn't hurt.

Neither could having a friend like Brody, who stopped by the group's holiday party and gave ARC a Christmas card with a check for $5,000 inside, Dixie said.

``He's a gentle, sweet man who just likes our kids,'' says Mary Schallert, who helps Dixie at the Bell Ringers' performances. ``When people ask him why, he says because they're his friends. The kids love him.''

Some of them aren't really kids, anymore. Most of the Bell Ringers are in their 30s and 40s - like Dixie's daughter, Deborah, and Mary's daughter, Susan.

But to these moms who met for the first time in a Studio City park in 1970 with a handful of other young mothers with developmentally disabled children worried about their futures, they'll always be lovingly called kids.

Even 33 years later as adults - when their kids are the hottest holiday entertainment ticket in town.
