``I remember last year when I was leaving fifth grade I was feeling really bad because there's only one year of school left,'' said Salahi, who will begin junior high next fall. ``I have lots of friends here and the teachers have all supported me.''

Marc Winger, superintendent of the Newhall School District The Newhall School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Valencia and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California, as well as the Stevenson Ranch community in unincorporated Los Angeles County. , marveled at the success of such a young school. A California Distinguished School in 1998, Stevenson Ranch earned a National Blue Ribbon in its first year of eligibility.

``This school is only 7 years old,'' Winger said. ``It has been a challenge, but everyone has answered the call over and over again. And the school has provided a safe place for our kids to learn and succeed.''

Principal von Buelow watched the class presidents give their speeches and, remembering the boys as kindergartners, admitted feeling a sense of pride at how they and others have grown.

``That is the best thing about being in an elementary school,'' she said. ``There isn't really another place where they spend this period of time in one place. These are seven such formative years. I'm just filled with pride to see their maturity and presence.''
