A BLUE RIBBON FOR FAIR'S CLEANLINESS? CARE IN CARNIVAL SETUP EXTENDS TO SAFETY, STAFF.

Byline: David Seaton Staff Writer

This might be the cleanliest carnival around. Forget the snaggle-toothed carnie barking about prizes with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, a gold hoop hanging from his ear and tattoos running up his arm.

This place has a dress code. When the Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  opens its gates today, the rush of carnivalgoers into the midway won't see earrings on men, visible tattoos or hair grown past the collar.

``They've gotten rid of a lot of stigma about carnivals,'' said Fairplex spokesman Sid Robinson. And all workers operating rides are drug tested before the show starts with random tests done throughout, said Tony Fiori, marketing director for carnival operator Ray Cammack Shows.

``We are a carnival with an amusement park-like atmosphere,'' Fiori declared.

Part of that ambience includes flowers and plants hauled in 10 trucks that will turn the midway into an asphalt garden.

``For me to try to describe it wouldn't do it justice,'' said the raspy-voiced Fiori.

to set up 75 rides, 40 games and 15 food wagons by the morning deadline.

Ray Cammack expected to hire 300 temporary helpers in addition to the 200 permanent employees who assemble the rides, which were trucked down from the California State Fair in Sacramento on Tuesday.

``We only got about three or four hours of sleep,'' said Dylan Tudisco, who was taking a smoke break from setting up the Zombie A computer that has been covertly taken over in order to perform some nefarious task. It is estimated that millions of PCs around the world have been compromised and, under the control of a third party, routinely transmit messages unbeknownst to the user. , a dark ride and haunted house A haunted house is defined as building that is believed to be a center for supernatural occurrences or paranormal phenomena.[1] A haunted house may contain ghosts, poltergeists, or even malevolent entities. . ``We finished Monday night and hopped in the truck and drove all the way down here.''

It takes 100 tractor-trailers and 300 trucks and recreation vehicles to haul the equipment and crew. Like building a city overnight, workers hammered, drilled and hosed down rides and tents in the hot afternoon.

Only about 85 percent of the rides will open today. The show will offer 10 rides for $4.99 as an opening day promotion.

Inspections of the rides won't be finished until about 2 a.m., said Barry Schaible, a inspector hired by Ray Cammack.

``We have the final say on what's ready to go,'' said Schaible, of Richard Coulter Richard Coulter (March, 1788 - April 21, 1852) was a Jacksonian member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
