A BLAST FROM THE PAST KENNEDY'S WALK-OFF HR STIRS ANGELS' MEMORIES OF 2002 ANGELS 5, BALTIMORE 2 (10).

That victory sent the Angels to the World Series.

``I think it was that feeling just because Adam hit the home run,'' Scioscia said. ``There was a little resemblance. The stadium was charged, maybe not quite to that fever pitch fever pitch

While admittedly thrilled, Kennedy still wasn't too caught up in the moment to compare it to his biggest career highlight.

``Not really because after that, you take the next step (to the World Series),'' he said. ``This was just a step along the road but a big one for us with Oakland losing. It's definitely a good feeling, that's for sure.''

Three Angels victories and three A's defeats later that lead is 5 1/2 with 22 games remaining.

The Angels just need to trim 2 1/2 more games before they reach their magic number. The first of those final seven head-to-head matchups take place in 16 days at Oakland.

``We've gone through the roller coaster (of the division chase) a few times this year,'' Kennedy said. ``The last couple of days have given us a little more life and hopefully, we take advantage of it.''

The Angels got another strong pitching performance out of a starter when John Lackey went seven innings. But his chance at a victory was blown when Scot Shields allowed a run in the eighth inning for a 2-2 tie.

Lackey gave up one run on nine hits in his seven innings of work with a walk and five strikeouts. Brendan Donnelly (4-0) was the winner after pitching a scoreless 10 thinning.

It was pitching that was supposed to lead the Angels this season, and it has come through over the past four games, all victories. The Angels have given up a combined five runs over those past four games to rebound from a 9-0 defeat to the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

The Angels had wasted numerous opportunities to win this one, leaving 11 runners on base and going 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Darin Erstad, who was supposed to be used as a late-inning defensive replacement over the final month, nearly helped win it with his bat. His leadoff double in the ninth inning was wasted, though.

``The boys have been grinding through this all summer long,'' Erstad said. ``There have been a lot of ups and a lot of downs. They just fought through it and hey, we still have a chance. Just go out there (today) and lay it all on the line again and see what happens.''

Howie Kendrick had an eventful seventh inning when he misplayed a ball at first base that went for a hit and the tying run for the Orioles. But he led off the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

Erstad replaced Kendrick at first base to start the eighth inning.

Shields, who has now given up 10 earned runs over his past 13 outings, gave up a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ramon Hernandez. That run eliminated Lackey from a shot at the victory.
