In less than two minutes, Kelvin Taylor of Springfield was crowned the winner.

The Blackberry Jam festival, so named because of Oregon's abundance of blackberries, is a family affair, said founder Greg Rundo.

"Contrary to some beliefs, this is not a hippie festival like the Country Fair," Rundo said.

Brian Ballou, a fire information officer with the Oregon Department of Forestry, said as many as 20 people signed up for the half-hour tours of the kitchen, shower units, medical tent and communications room at the compound on the high school grounds.

"I think people are fascinated by the process, the ability to assemble this camp pretty fast," he said.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters were battling the 4,964 acre fire. The blaze is 60 percent contained, said Greg Thayer, a fire information officer. The estimated cost so far is $7.9 million, he said.
