A BEAUTIFUL CHALLENGE: AN `AWESOME EXPERIENCE' GEYER OFF TO A STRONG START AT STATE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

Pebble Pebble - A polymorphic language.

Beach is as challenging as it is beautiful. That's the first thing Nick Geyer, 17, who is making his State Amateur Golf Championship debut, is learning.

While most golfers at Pebble Beach were busy concentrating on the field or their games, Geyer - a Viewpoint High of Calabasas graduate - was busy with something every bit as hazardous for anyone playing Pebble Beach for the first time: gawking.

As trivial as it might sound, the course's breathtaking beauty can be just as distracting as a raucous rau·cous

2. Boisterous and disorderly: "the raucous give and take of American democracy"
crowd or undulating green. Geyer says although it's difficult not to get caught up in his surroundings, there aren't many other places he'd rather be.

``It's an awesome experience, with that field and that location,'' said Geyer, an Agoura Hills resident who is representing Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician

The youngest of 10 area qualifiers for the 94th California championship, Geyer was one of four locals in the group of 60 that survived the first two rounds at Poppy poppy, common name for some members of the Papaveraceae, a family composed chiefly of herbs of the Northern Hemisphere having a characteristic milky or colored sap.  Hills Golf Club Hills Golf Club is a golf club located in Mölndal near Gothenburg in Sweden. The top 32 today will advance to the match-play portion of the tournament, which runs through Sunday.

Geyer, who will play on scholarship next season at New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S). , shot 73-76-149 and joined Valencia's Brian Edick (78-70-148), Cal State Northridge's Doug Miller (73-77-150) and Oak Park's Craig Steinberg (75-75-151) in the final medal-play round.

For Geyer, the State Amateur is just the latest accomplishment in what is shaping up to be the best season of his amateur career.

Overshadowed in the Prep League by Brett Kanda of Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge - the league champion, CIF/SCGA champion, all-state performer and Daily News Player of the Year - Geyer has improved throughout the year.

He shot 68 in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City Junior Championship, claimed his first berths in the Southern Section and CIF/SCGA finals and won the Ventura City Championship.

``A lot of it is confidence,'' Geyer said. ``I definitely think I made a jump this year. I'm thinking about shooting under par or in the 60s more often.''

He has come a long way since he started golfing at age 6, but Geyer has grown accustomed to success after shooting par his freshman season at Viewpoint and defeating Kanda for the league title as a sophomore.

``He always had power,'' said Flintridge Prep coach Bob Loughrie, who witnessed Geyer drive a par-4 green at Westlake Village Golf Course the first time he saw the left-hander play.

``It wasn't until his junior year that he got the short game to go with it. Now, I think he's going to do really well in college.''

Just as long as he keeps the gawking to a minimum.
