A BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL : TONIGHT'S WESTLAKE-NEWBURY PARK LOSER MIGHT NOT QUALIFY FOR POSTSEASON PLAY.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

What was billed as a championship game has turned into a contest for survival.

Newbury Park coach George Hurley George Hurley (born September 4 1958 in Brockton, Massachusetts) is a drummer noted for his work with The Minutemen and fIREHOSE. Hurley's powerful style brought a sense of musicianship to the genre, paving the way for new possibilities in underground music.  and Westlake's Jim Benkert realize the importance of their football game tonight at Westlake.

And it isn't for the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  championship.

These two traditional league powers are fighting for that third and final automatic playoff spot.

``Whoever loses has to hope for help,'' Hurley said. ``The winner controls their own destiny.''

Newbury Park (6-1, 3-1) is in better position with just one league loss. The Panthers lost to Camarillo and need a win to force a possible title matchup with Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  in two weeks.

Meanwhile, Westlake is desperate. The area's No. 1 team just two weeks ago has dropped two straight and is two games behind In sports, the phrase games behind, often abbreviated as GB in tables, is a common way to reflect the gap between a leading team and another team in a sports league, conference, or division.  first-place Thousand Oaks and Camarillo with three to play. With the top three teams making the playoffs, Westlake's only playoff hope would be a wild-card berth if it loses tonight.

``We're a play or two away from being undefeated,'' Benkert said. ``But when good teams meet, someone's got to lose. Bad things have happened to us.''

Neither coach will guarantee a win but both guaranteed a high-scoring game. What? In the Marmonte League?

Two of the area's best quarterbacks face off. Newbury Park's Chris Czernek has thrown for an area-leading 2,235 yards and 18 touchdowns. One number that jumps out is his nine interceptions - he had 16 last season. Czernek took a hit near the conclusion of last week's win at Royal but was cleared by a doctor on Sunday and has practiced all week.

Chris Garty (37 receptions, 551 yards) is one of three Newbury Park receivers with more than 30 catches. Jake Farrel (33) and Patrick Reddick (32) present more problems for defenses. The Panthers have averaged 453 yards and 36 points per game.

Obviously, offense hasn't been a problem. Newbury Park has been decent on defense but not overwhelming. It will be challenged by Westlake. A key player could be Panthers lineman Brian Nelson Brian Nelson may refer to:

``I expect him to make plays,'' Hurley said. ``He's our big guy on offense and defense.''

The Warriors could be unbeaten, but have made crucial mistakes in the final minutes. Knocked off its pedestal pedestal

, Westlake must return to the basics.

Quarterback Casey Preston is second to Czernek with 1,819 yards and 17 touchdowns but also nine interceptions. Receiver Joey Cuppari (34 catches, 579 yards) is among the area's best along with Elliot Kane (28 catches) and tight end Scott Swaving (24).

``I think our offense has done a fine job,'' Benkert said. ``We want to drive the football and keep it out of Newbury Park's hands.''

The Warriors need to utilize tailback tail·back

Jon Weems, who disappeared in the loss to Thousand Oaks. His running, along with Preston's passing, makes Westlake difficult to contain.

Safety Kjell Nesen, who has been limited to place-kicking because of a broken hand, will start in the secondary.

``It could be a game played well into the night,'' Hurley said. ``It should be exciting.''

Cleveland (2-5, 1-3) at Chatsworth (3-4, 1-3): It's not for the Northwest Valley Conference title, but this is a crucial game for both teams if either wants to make the 3-A playoffs.

Chatsworth is on a three-game losing streak, dropping a disappointing decision to Birmingham last week. Ryan Martinez is scheduled to start at quarterback for Chatsworth. Receiver LaRon Buckner (48 catches, 712 yards) is closing in on All-City honors.

Cleveland likes to pass as much as Chatsworth. Quarterback Jared Mills has 1,154 passing yards and 12 touchdowns but the Cavaliers need to run to be successful.

(4-3, 2-2) at Birmingham (4-3, 2-2): The winner has a shot at the 4-A playoffs, while the loser falls back with the rest of the pack of the Northwest Valley.

El Camino Real is playing strong football, despite its 17-3 loss last week to Kennedy. Tailback Quincy Wright Philip Quincy Wright (28 December 1890 – 17 October 1970) was an American political scientist known for his pioneering work and expertise in international law and international relations.  has 691 yards and eight touchdowns and quarterback Aaron Fredette has kept defenses honest with 542 passing yards and 230 rushing yards. The Conquistadores need to use ball control to keep the Birmingham offense off the field.

The Braves' Emmanuel Evans will play despite a sprained hand. Receiver Bobby Davis is out with a sprained knee. Evans is second among area City teams with 1,063 yards rushing and has been effective despite nine-man fronts. The fate of Birmingham's season rests on the shoulders of the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder.

Monroe (4-3, 1-3) at Reseda (3-4, 2-2): What happened to the Vikings? They were undefeated, ranked 10th and then just fell apart. Turnovers are the reason, according to according to

interim coach Don Senegal, and he has been stressing all week that Monroe is fighting for its playoff life. Meanwhile, Reseda's doing the same.

Monroe tailback Vinny Walker leads area City Section teams in rushing with 1,209 yards and 10 touchdowns, while backfield mate George Garcia has 659 yards and four touchdowns. The problem has been defense - a yearly thorn - which has allowed 28 points per game. That's tough to overcome every week.

The Regents' three wins have been by a combined nine points, which means they can win in the clutch. Reseda's problem has been the offense, which averages just nine points per game. It's very disappointing because quarterback Jamaal Washington (688 yards) has had to carry most of the load.

Van Nuys (4-3, 3-1) at Canoga Park (4-3, 3-1): Amazingly, both these teams are a game behind Sylmar in the Valley Pac-8 and a 4-A playoff spot could be in the future for the winner.

Van Nuys has been a surprise. It lost a tough game to Sylmar and responded by scoring 50 points last week against Monroe. Tailback Carlos Mack is third in the conference with 672 yards and eight touchdowns. The defense, led by Jerry Garcia-Montes, has stiffened to allow just 68 points in the past four games, after being touched for 90 in the first three.

Canoga Park will be without lineman Vince Rodriguez (ejected last week). Quarterback Brian Hickman leads the conference in passing with 1,084 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kevin Carlsen has 35 catches, 14 more than anyone else in the Valley Pac-8.

Agoura (4-3, 2-2) at Thousand Oaks (6-0-1, 5-0): The Chargers' two league losses have been by a total of 14 points, and they blew a 28-point lead to Camarillo. Led by quarterback Ryan McCann Ryan McCann (born 21 September 1981 in Bellshill) is a Scottish football midfielder currently playing for Bohemians. McCann began his career with Celtic, where he made one solitary appearance in an end of season game.  (1,153 passing yards, 12 touchdowns) and the rushing of Jason Gordon (981 yards, 15 touchdowns), Agoura has turned into a scary opponent.

are trying to avoid an upset before their final two showdowns with Camarillo and Newbury Park. Agoura has allowed more than 200 yards per game passing, so Thousand Oaks quarterback Scott McEwan (1,368 yards, 13 touchdowns) could have a big game. All that's necessary is for Thousand Oaks to hold on. A loss for the Lancers could put their playoff hopes on the line. That's how unkind losing in the Marmonte League has been.

Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  (4-3, 2-0) vs. Muir (4-3, 2-0) at Pasadena CC: The Falcons usually don't have much success against the Mustangs and will need a maximum effort to pull out a win. Quarterback/tailback Kenny Pritchett is second in area rushing with 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns. He will need to outduel Muir's Sultan McCullough Sultan McCullough (born February 12, 1980 in Pasadena, California) is an American football running back in the National Football League who is now signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.  for a Falcons' victory. Crespi must hope quarterback Nick Rita (1,260 passing yards, 11 touchdowns) can move the ball and keep Loyola's ball-control offense off the field. That's the only chance Crespi has.

Loyola is led by quarterback Ray Kasper, who didn't play in the 24-10 loss to Hart.

According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. : Oh, how far these mighty programs have fallen. The loser will be watching the playoffs from the stands.

Canyon is in the better position, actually. It's played the two toughest teams in Hart and Burroughs and finishes with Saugus, Valencia and Burbank. The Cowboys are led by quarterback Rick Thomas ST1TCH (born Rick Thomas) is American sampler for Mushroomhead and Ventana. It has been stated that Thomas was originally called "Stick", due to the fact that he is skinny, but someone mistakenly called him Stitch and the name stuck.  (983 passing yards) and tailback Jeff McKinley (578 rushing). The problem has been the Cowboys defense, which hasn't been able to stop anybody (383 yards per game allowed).

Saugus' Mark Pecaro is second in the Foothill League in rushing with 636 yards. The Centurions haven't been overwhelming on either side of the ball.
