A BARBARA BOXER ALTERNATIVE? U.S. TREASURER ROSARIO MARIN MAY SEEK SENATE SEAT.

Byline: Lisa Friedman Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Former Huntington Park Huntington Park, city (1990 pop. 56,065), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential and industrial suburb of Los Angeles; founded 1856, inc. 1906. Its varied manufactures include metal, glass and rubber products and industrial equipment.  Mayor Rosario Marin Rosario Marin (originally: MarĂn) was the 41st Treasurer of the United States from August 21, 2001 to June 30, 2003 under President George W. Bush. Education  announced Thursday she will resign next month as U.S. Treasurer, fueling speculation she will launch a U.S. Senate bid against Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is an American politician and the current junior U.S. Senator from the State of California.

A member of the Democratic Party, Boxer was first elected to the U.S.
.

``After a long and thoughtful consideration, my family and I have decided to go back home to California,'' Marin, 44, wrote in a letter to Treasury Secretary John Snow.

She declined interviews and gave no further explanation for her resignation, effective June 30.

But Republicans said the announcement leaves little doubt Marin is about to embark upon a statewide campaign.

``It's been no secret that Ms. Marin is actively considering a U.S. Senate run. Obviously, resigning her post allowed her to become more politically active,'' said Rob Stutzman, spokesman for the California Republican Party The California Republican Party is the California affiliate of the national Republican Party. Its chairman is Ron Nehring and is based in Burbank, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. .

Marin, who spoke no English when she immigrated to the United States from Mexico at age 15, is the highest-ranking Latina in the Bush administration. She served seven years with former Gov. Pete Wilson and two terms on the City Council in Huntington Park, a city of 61,000 people about four miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or .

In her current position, Marin has focused on U.S.-Mexico financial relationships and on promoting financial literacy in Hispanic communities. In a recent interview, she said that priority grew out of her work in Southern California.

Neither the National Republican Senatorial Committee The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is the Republican Hill committee for the United States Senate, working to elect Republicans to that body. The NRSC was founded in 1916 as the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.  nor the White House has committed to supporting Marin, who still is an untested campaign fund-raiser.

``There's a lot of good potential Republican candidates that are taking a serious look at this race, and we're encouraged by that,'' said NRSC NRSC National Republican Senatorial Committee

NRSC National Remote Sensing Centre (India; formerly National Remote Sensing Agency)
NRSC National Radio Science Conference
 spokesman Dan Allen.

Boxer campaign spokesman Roy Behr called Marin a ``third-tier candidate.''

``On paper, it is once again another measure of desperation that Republicans are going to have to turn to a former city council member from the 116th-largest city in the state as a potential nominee,'' Behr said.

Others who have openly expressed interest in challenging Boxer include Rep. George Radanovich, R-Fresno, and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Toni Casey. Rep. Doug Ose, R-Sacramento, recently announced he would not run.
