They've been coming in all sizes and ages - some with 48 stars, some from as far back as World War I.

Tattered and torn American flags being dropped off at Jonathon Lawes' home in Chatsworth so the 16-year-old Boy Scout can retire them with honor.

``The response has been incredible,'' said Andrea Lawes, Jon's mom. ``The phone started ringing at 8:30 a.m. Friday and hasn't stopped.

``Our dining room is filled with more than 150 old flags people have dropped off with notes attached, and there's a ton more Jonathon hasn't had a chance to pick up yet.

``The people are so nice and supportive of what my son is doing. And there seems to be a warm, touching story that comes with every flag.''

That's what I figured when I wrote Friday about this Chatsworth High School student who is working on his Eagle Scout Ea·gle Scout

Many of them were stored away in garages, in boxes in the back of closets, in drawers seldom opened anymore - just waiting for someone to come along and retire them properly.

``I was afraid to unroll it for fear that it would fall apart,'' she said Monday. ``I didn't know what to do with it until I read about this sweet boy and what he wants to do: Retire these old flags with honor.''

``My daughter found it in a Goodwill store and bought it for 50 cents,'' she said. ``She didn't want something bad to happen to it.

``She was worried someone would buy it and cut it up to use for material for clothing or whatever. But now, thanks to this wonderful boy, it's going to get what it deserves.''

The reaction has been kind of awe-inspiring, Jonathon said Monday after coming home from school. He spent most of Saturday picking up old flags, and he will do the same again this Saturday and next.

He will get in his parents' car and drive out to Simi Valley to pick up an old flag from a 90-year-old veteran who was wounded in the Battle of Midway Noun 1. ``A lot of people tell me they want to come to the ceremony because these flags have meant a lot to them,'' Jonathon said. ``As soon as I confirm the date with my scoutmaster, I'll let them know because these flags are very important to them.''

Then I'll let you know, so you can bring your old flag to the ceremony so it can be retired with honor, as it should be, with the right invocations as it is cut into pieces and finally burned according to custom.
