A BAD FIRST IMPRESSION AFTER REACHING TOP OF AL WEST, ANGELS STUMBLE TAMPA BAY 6, ANGELS 3.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Showing they are better followers than leaders, the Angels were defeated Tuesday in their first game as a first-place team in nearly three months.

A 16-4 record in July vaulted the Angels from American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. The division currently has four teams, but it has had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment.  basement to division top spot in a quick ascent that appeared to leave the team a little light-headed Tuesday.

Jamie Shields (Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:

of Newhall) showed that as long as he has a roof over his head, facing the Angels is no problem, as he helped pitch the Devil Rays to a 6-3 victory.

Shields gave up two runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings in his 11th career start and third against the Angels.

Shields is 1-1 with a no-decision against the Angels this season, pitching well in both games at his own ballpark. He has allowed a combined two runs to the Angels in 12 1/3 innings at the indoor Tropicana Field Coordinates:

It wasn't like the Angels weren't without chances. The Angels were 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  and hit into a double play in each of the first three innings.

``The good part about it is we're winning and staying right there in the hunt,'' said Chone Figgins Desmond DeChone "Chone" Figgins (born January 22, 1978 in Leary, Georgia) is a Major League Baseball utility player for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Despite the unusual spelling of his first name, "Chone" is pronounced as "Shawn. , who lined into an inning-ending double play in the third inning when the game was still scoreless. ``You can't change things, you just have to keep swinging and hopefully maybe you break a bat and they fall in. The guys are doing well and that's what is more important to keep playing well and staying in the hunt.''

Angels manager Mike Scioscia

said after the defeat that he was operating under the same premise that the standings don't matter.

``Our challenge is ahead of us and it's a real challenge and the standings aren't going to come into play,'' Scioscia said. ``We need to just play good baseball.''

     for a 2-0 lead.

The Devil Rays tied it in their half of the inning when Ty Wigginton crushed a two-run home run deep into the left-field stands. It was Wigginton's 17th home run, tying his career high.

It only got worse in the seventh inning for the Angels, as four of the first five Devil Rays scored. An RBI double from former Angel Josh Paul put the Devil Rays up for good 3-2. Rocco Baldelli chased Santana with an RBI single and Wigginton put it away with a two-run double off reliever Hector Carrasco.

All the runs were charged to Santana (11-4) as he gave up nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. It was his first defeat since May 31 against the Twins and snapped his career-high seven- game decision streak.

Devil Rays reliever Jon Switzer (2-1) picked up the victory by getting Shields out of trouble in the seventh with a strikeout of Figgins and a fielder's choice on Maicer Izturis with runners on first and third.

Not that it mattered, but Santana's first five innings were an improvement over his previous start when he gave up eight walks and five hits in 4 1/3 innings and still managed a no-decision. He didn't walk a batter Tuesday.

``Last time doesn't matter because it passed and I forgot about it,'' Santana said. ``I have to worry about what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music.  next.''

Carrasco's outing only highlighted the Angels' bullpen struggles of late.

In addition to the two-run double by Wigginton, the right-hander gave up two walks in his one-third of an inning. Scioscia said Carrasco tweaked his ankle during the outing, but should be fine.

One positive sign was that Brendan Donnelly pitched a scoreless inning, allowing just a double to Paul. Donnelly entered with a 24.75 ERA this month.

It was the first time Paul had two extra-base hits in a game since 2001, when he was with the Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The White Sox are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the White Sox have played in U.S. .

The Devil Rays snapped a six-game losing streak to the Angels, their longest ever.
