A BACKWARD STREAK; MARAUDERS BASEBALL, SOFTBALL TEAMS STRUGGLE.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

This is not the way coaches Joe Watts and Gene Pagliaro planned their 1998 baseball and softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  seasons.

Until the Marauders scored a 5-4 Foothill Conference softball win over Desert on Wednesday, the teams were each reeling from losing streaks.

The softball team snapped a six-game skid, but the baseball team took a 10-game streak into Thursday's game at Victor Valley, the first of three consecutive road trips for the 2-13 Marauders, who are 0-9 away from home.

The reason for the baseball team's misfortunes isn't difficult to pinpoint: pitching, or a lack of it.

pitchers who have seen time on the mound, Tyler Kincaid and Jason Raine, can claim an ERA of under 10. Kincaid's numbers went down even further following a complete-game 5-3 loss to Victor Valley Tuesday. The sophomore (2-2) has earned both of the team's wins.

The softball team, searching for its sixth consecutive Foothill Conference championship, opened the regular season with a come-from-behind win over Pierce but dropped 10 of 12.

During the six-game losing streak, AVC (4-10 overall) opened the defense of its league title with a 3-2 loss to Chaffey before Wednesday's victory over Desert.

Beginning with today's 3 p.m. game against Victor Valley at Marie Kerr Park in Palmdale, the Marauders play four of their next six at home.

Track and field: The Marauders will compete at the Bakersfield Relays beginning today and concluding Saturday.

The question for AVC coach Mark Covert: can freshman sprinter Tranisha Holmes break her own school record again?

The Palmdale High product ran an 11.9 (hand-timed) 100 meters at a Western States Conference meet at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. Even the automatic time of 12.14 was plenty fast enough for Holmes to bump Niani Dunn's five-year-old mark of 12.38.

The first was as a 1994 freshman, when he completed 12 of 16 passes for 302 yards against Victor Valley, one of just three AVC quarterbacks to surpass the 300 plateau.

Gleich's second biggest performance might have been in the Marauders' 9-7 win over Kings River last Sept. 20. Gleich directed a 13-play, 61-yard drive that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Collins with 19 seconds left in the game.
