A 'long term' administrator. What led you to the nursing home business? Baranan: Back in 1957, I went out to see this old house on St. Charles Avenue St. Charles Avenue is a thoroughfare in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the home of the world famous St. Charles Streetcar Line. It is also famous for the hundreds of mansions that adorn the tree-lined boulevard for much of the Uptown section of the route. . There was a dead tree in the front yard, the shingles shingles: see herpes zoster. shingles or herpes zoster Acute viral skin and nerve infection. Groups of small blisters appear along certain nerve segments, most often on the back, sometimes after a dull ache at the site; pain becomes were falling off the house, and the screens were torn. It was a horrible mess. I looked around and finally found "Finally Found" was the debut single from the Honeyz. This was their most successful single in the UK and worldwide, securing a number 4 position in the UK singles chart and achieved platinum status in Australia [1] Tracklisting # Title Length somebody who told me it was a nursing home. I asked who was in charge and she said, "Nobody. The lady who owned it died, but I know we pay $300 a month rent." I thought that would be worth something, so I bought the house. When I went to see about the rent, they said they hadn't paid anything in seven months. And someone had stolen all the food. There were about eight or nine patients in the house, so I went out and bought food so they'd have something to eat. I called the state and they said that the place was licensed as a nursing home. Then I called my family doctor and I told him what had happened. He said, "We need a nursing home--run it!" How did you know where to begin? Baranan: Nobody had the slightest idea how to run a nursing home back then. But I had been captain of a ship during World War II, and we had used logbooks. So I made a day logbook and a night logbook. We ran the home that way, and gradually built up our own manual of rules--how we did things, how we hired people. Was it easier to find good staff members back then? Baranan: In those days, you just had to hire people and teach them. Plenty of people answered my ads. To weed them out, I gave them a mop and a bucket. At first, they did nothing but mop floors. If they objected, I got rid of them. As a result, I got a clean place and found out who wanted to work, After they'd mopped floors for a while, we trained them to take care of patients. That worked, and we gradually got a good reputation in the community. How do you find staff now? Baranan: We advertise all the time, but there are not enough nursing people of any category available. The young hands are just not there anymore. As to the government programs for CNAs, the idea was okay to begin with, but then they made it so that you cannot use people at all unless they've been through one of those courses. Your really good people between 35 and 50 don't really want to go to school with those kids. How has the increasing number of lawsuits against nursing homes affected the business? Baranan: It is killing the industry. The lawyers bring in professional witnesses-- doctors and nurses who have loads of experience acting in the courtroom theater. They convince juries that only an enormous verdict can help nursing home patients get good care. In fact, these verdicts take away the money, the wherewithal where·with·al n. Baranan: If they limited the total amount of damages to the amount that is paid by Workers' Compensation workers' compensation, payment by employers for some part of the cost of injuries, or in some cases of occupational diseases, received by employees in the course of their work. for the same or similar injuries, that's all it would take. What kinds of community outreach and activities do you have at Ansley Pavilion? Baranan: All kinds of things. We have people come in and do exercises with the patients. Others come in and put on parties for us. We've had two pianos donated, and the Humane Society A humane society is a group that aims to stop animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons. Examples Examples of humane societies include: The Humane Society of the United States, Peninsula Humane Society, American Humane which was founded in 1877 as a network of is good about bringing pets to visit the patients. Two or three outfits put on Christmas parties every year. What accomplishment are you particularly proud of? Baranan: We are able to take care of patients better. For example, we used to get dehydration dehydration Method of food preservation in which moisture (primarily water) is removed. Dehydration inhibits the growth of microorganisms and often reduces the bulk of food. in patients no matter what we did. Now I have "hydration hydration /hy·dra·tion/ (hi-dra´shun) the absorption of or combination with water. hy·dra·tion n. 1. What do you find most rewarding? Baranan: In spite of all the aggravation Any circumstances surrounding the commission of a crime that increase its seriousness or add to its injurious consequences. Such circumstances are not essential elements of the crime but go above and beyond them. , it's enjoyable work. I go around and hug the patients and staff members, and I try to keep up morale. During World War II, I used to say, "Why am I here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean five thousand miles from land? The government put me here, so I have to do it." Nowadays, I ask myself: "What am I doing here running this Ansley Pavilion Nursing Home? Heaven gave me the job, so I have to do it." Aaron Baranan purchased the crumbling, old house in downtown Atlanta Downtown Atlanta refers to the largest financial district for the city of Atlanta.
