A `GOOD GUY' RECEIVES DESERVED RECOGNITION : SENIORS PROGRAM THANKS VOLUNTEER.

Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer

For 20 years, Stan Howie made volunteering his job, putting in hours for himself and the community.

During his years of service, mostly for senior organizations, Howie became known as someone who could get the job done.

``You could certainly rely on him. When he said he was going to do something, he did it,'' said Lois Roby, retired director of the Fitzgerald House, since renamed the Fitzgerald Center. ``He's just a real good guy. He's never been given the credit he deserves for all he's done.''

Howie's volunteer days have come to an end for now. He's been spending a lot of time alone at the Castle Hill Retirement Village in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. . He is unable to help out because of a pinched nerve he sustained when he broke his back a year ago, and he misses his wife of 64 years, who died in May.

``I guess I'm retired - retired from retirement,'' Howie joked.

That duty was just one of his volunteer jobs. Howie served on the RSVP advisory council as treasurer and participated in Senior Concerns, which operates Meals on Wheels n. 1. Such programs are usually conducted by governmental or charitable organizations.  and Senior Advisers, a program that tells the elderly about services available to them.

When Howie wasn't busy with those activities, he helped seniors figure out their taxes and accepted utility payments through a program at the Global Senior Center called Utilipay. When he got home, Howie worked with stained glass stained glass, in general, windows made of colored glass. To a large extent, the name is a misnomer, for staining is only one of the methods of coloring employed, and the best medieval glass made little use of it.  as a hobby.

``I was retired and had nothing else to do. I wanted to help the community,'' Howie said. ``There are things you can do for yourself, but you're not helping anyone. You don't make any difference.''

Roby, who worked with Howie at the Global Senior Center, is convinced he made a difference.

``He is a gentleman, a fine person you'd want to know,'' Roby said.
