A $37.2 million investment - Donohue inaugurates the secondary wastewater treatment system at its Clermont mill.

CLERMONT, Quebec--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1995--Denis Jean, executive vice-president, Pulp & Paper of Donohue Inc., inaugurates the secondary wastewater treatment system at the Clermont Newsprint Mill.

This event marks the start-up of a $37.2 million investment complex.

This investment will reduce substantially the impact of mill effluents in the Malbaie River There are two Malbaie Rivers in the province of Quebec in Canada. The Malbaie River in the Charlevoix region empties into the Saint Lawrence River at La Malbaie. Up until 1985, the river was used to transport logs downstream.  with the construction of a secondary wastewater treatment system and the installation of a sludgetreatment system for energy recovery. Furthermore, other projects were executed to reduce the mill water consumption, thus making Donohue one of the best performing mills in this regard.

In short, the system operates as follows: the Clermont mill effluent contains suspended solids (wood fibres) and dissolved organic substances (resins and sugars coming from wood). The primary treatment removes most of the solids by decantation decantation /de·can·ta·tion/ (de?kan-ta´shun) the pouring of a clear supernatant liquid from a sediment.

The secondary treatment decomposes dissolved substances using a proven air-activated sludge technology. The company selected this high-performing system because of the reduction of more than 95 percent of the biochemical oxygen demand biochemical oxygen demand: see sewerage.  (BOD BOD: see sewerage. 5) and the elimination of effluent toxicity.

Finally, the primary and secondary sludges are pressed and then burnt at the mill steam plant, in a fluidized-bed boiler producing over 9,000 kilograms of steam per hour.

According to Jean, the start-up of these systems, within schedule, allows Donohue to be in line with environmental standards and constitutes an important step to reintroduce salmon into the Malbaie River in 1996.

The Clermont Paper Mill, located in the Charlevoix County, has an annual capacity of 315,000 tonnes of newsprint, employs 425 people and generates economic benefits exceeding $50 million per year in the region.

Donohue Inc. is a major Canadian integrated forest products company engaged in the managing and harvesting of timber resources and the production and sale of newsprint, market pulp and lumber. Its production facilities are among the most modern in the Canadian forest products industry.
