A'S PUT HURT ON ANGELS FRANK THOMAS' WALK-OFF HOMER KNOCKS OUT L.A. Unfortunately there was a hitch in their game as well a five-game win streak was snapped by a 7-5 A's victory in a game that featured seven home runs. Frank Thomas Frank Thomas may refer to:
The Angels were playing the A's for the first time since May 2 when John Lackey John Derran Lackey (born October 23, 1978, in Abilene, Texas) is a major league baseball starting pitcher from Abilene, Texas. He has played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim his entire career. barked at Jason Kendall Jason Daniel Kendall (born June 26, 1974 in San Diego, California) is a Major League Baseball catcher whom is currently a free agent. He is the son of former catcher Fred Kendall, who played in the majors from 1969–1980. for leaning out over the plate and Kendall charged the mound. That wasn't what bothered the Angels the most that day, though. Most members of the Angels were not pleased Robb Quinlan was hit by a Chad Gaudin pitch near the end of Oakland's 10-3 victory, even though Mark Ellis twice was hit by pitches. While the A's were downplaying the matchup, Lackey said the Angels were not about to forgive or forget Forgive or Forget was a talk show which aired in national syndication across the United States from June 1998 to May 2000. The premise of the show involved people talking about past incidents in which the guests had wronged, or had been wronged by, a friend or a loved one, . ``I think it's helped this whole road trip and the last couple of games knowing that this was coming,'' Lackey said. ``The guys wanted to play well at the right time.'' Quinlan was not even in the lineup Thursday but the mild-mannered reserve still seemed pumped up for this one. The Angels definitely brought their power game but their situational approach was lacking. They had four home runs off A's starter Esteban Loaiza, but they were all solo shots. In the seventh inning, after Vladimir Guerrero tied the game 5-5 on a double, the Angels had the bases loaded and nobody out. But Gaudin struck out Mike Napoli and got Juan Rivera to ground into a double play to end the threat. The Angels couldn't have had a better guy at the plate. Rivera already had delivered two home runs earlier in the game, his second two-homer game in three days. Guerrero and Napoli also had delivered solo shots against Loaiza, who has given up seven runs in two starts against the Angels this season. Angels starter Kelvim Escobar did not fare much better than Loaiza, but he wasn't taken deep as often. Escobar gave up two home runs and five runs total in six innings, but just three of the runs were earned. What hurt most was a two-run first inning that was aided by a Kendry Morales error at first base. After Escobar loaded the bases with one out, he appeared to get the popup he needed with Jay Payton at the plate. Morales drifted back on the ball just behind first base and in foul territory. Morales, though, appeared to hear umpire Brian Gorman call out the infield fly rule The Infield Fly Rule in baseball (specifically, rule 6.05e, coupled with the definition in rule section 2.00) is intended to prevent unfair gamesmanship by the fielders that would result in an easy double play or triple play. , in case the ball was in fair territory. Morales seem to quit on the play as if he thought second baseman Adam Kennedy was calling him off. On the very next pitch, Payton ripped a two-run single into left field. Orlando Cabrera managed to extend his on-base streak to 63 consecutive games with a fifth-inning single. Cabrera has waited until the fifth inning or later in all four games of the road trip before extending his streak. Lackey will get to bring his own intensity onto the field today when he matches up against Oakland's Barry Zito. The matchup of top pitchers would be highly anticipated even without the subplot sub·plot n. 1. A plot subordinate to the main plot of a literary work or film. Also called counterplot, underplot. 2. A subdivision of a plot of land, especially a plot used for experimental purposes. . Lackey was asked if the passage of two months had helped cure any animosity. ``No, not at all,'' he said. ``We all have good memories.'' doug.padilla@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2731 CAPTION(S): photo, box Photo: Oakland's Frank Thomas hits a walk-off two-run home run off the Angels' Scot Shields in the ninth inning.
