Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

LANCASTER - The sense of inevitability surrounding the JetHawks' California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth  title hopes that permeated their clubhouse before Sunday's Game 4 has suddenly turned to uncertainty.

A 12-8 loss to the hot-hitting Modesto A's in front of 1,331 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium has pushed the best-of-five series to the brink, with the JetHawks scheduled to host Game 5 tonight at 6:30.

Modesto, which set single-season league records for hits and doubles, pounded JetHawks pitchers for 21 hits, 18 of which came in the first six innings, when the A's opened up a 10-1 lead.

Modesto, which batted .302 during the regular season, was batting .327 in the postseason going into Sunday's game with double-digit hit totals in eight of nine games.

Modesto broke open a 6-1 game in the fifth, when they batted around in a three-run inning.

The JetHawks came within one batter of bringing Garthwaite to the plate representing the tying run when Jon Zeringue hit into a fielder's choice field·er's choice
