 A&W BRANDS APPOINTS LOWENKRON CHAIRMAN; SUCCEEDS HAAS & HICKS
 AS CO-CHAIRMEN; WEINSTEIN NAMED PRESIDENT & COO
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A&W Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ: SODA) announced today that M. L. (Lou) Lowenkron has been elected chairman of the board, effective Dec. 5, 1991. Lowenkron succeeds Robert B. Haas and Thomas O. Hicks, who have served as co-chairmen since 1986. Hicks and Haas will remain on the board and, together with Lowenkron, will serve as the nominating committee of the board.
 The board also voted to expand its size from seven to eight directors. The nominee for the open seat is expected to be an outside director.
 Lowenkron, who remains chief executive officer of the company, has been president of A&W Brands, Inc. and its predecessor companies since 1980.
 The company also announced today that Michael F. Weinstein was elected by the board to the post of president and chief operating officer, effective Dec. 5, 1991. He has been executive vice president- marketing since January 1987 and a member of the board since May 1987.
 Ernest J. Cavallo today was elected to the board of directors to fill a previously existing vacancy and was appointed executive vice president, effective Dec. 5, 1991. He has been senior vice president- CFO since January 1987 and chief financial officer since 1985. In addition, Cavallo also serves as treasurer and secretary.
 In 1983, A&W Beverages -- then a subsidiary of United Brands -- was sold to a group of investors headed by Citicorp Venture Capital, Ltd. In May 1986, the A&W Concentrate Company was purchased by the investment firm of Hicks & Haas and A&W's key senior management. In May 1987, A&W Brands, Inc. made its initial public offering of common stock.
 Haas is chairman of Haas & Partners Incorporated. Hicks is chairman and chief executive officer of Hicks, Muse & Co., Incorporated. Haas said, "We believe that the time has come to recognize Lou's leadership through this promotion. His stewardship has been a major driving force in the enormous success of A&W since 1986." Hicks said, "Lou has successfully guided the growth of A&W as CEO since 1986 and as chairman will continue to oversee A&W's development as the premier niche brand soft drink company in the industry."
 M. L. Lowenkron
 Lowenkron, 60, has over 36 years of experience in the soft drink industry. Prior to joining A&W, Lowenkron spent eight years with Cadbury-Schweppes U.S.A. His last position at that company was vice president of marketing and sales for new product development. Before joining Cadbury-Schweppes, Lowenkron spent three years with Canada Dry and 14 years at PepsiCo, Inc.
 In 1980, Lowenkron joined A&W Beverages as president. In 1986, Lowenkron became president and chief executive officer of A&W Brands, Inc. as part of the management-led LBO with Hicks and Haas.
 During the past ten years, the company's case sales have increased four-fold, with revenues reaching $119 million in 1990, an increase of 200 percent since 1986. This extraordinary growth was due to the revitalization of A&W Root Beer, the internal development of A&W Cream Soda, the acquisitions of Squirt and Vernors, and the licensing of Country Time Lemonade from General Foods.
 Michael F. Weinstein
 Weinstein, 42, has been involved in the soft drink industry for 20 years. He joined A&W Beverages in 1981 as vice president-marketing and was promoted to executive vice president in 1987.
 From 1978 to 1981, he was a vice president of Kenyon & Eckhardt Advertising, working primarily on advertising and marketing campaigns for Coca-Cola's soft drink and wine divisions. Before that, he spent six years with PepsiCo, where he directed marketing efforts at three bottling operations and was involved in new product development.
 Weinstein holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. from Lafayette College.
 Ernest J. Cavallo
 Cavallo, 58, joined A&W Beverages in 1985 as vice president-chief financial officer and was promoted to his current position, senior vice president-chief financial officer, in January 1987.
 From 1975 to 1985, he was an officer and assistant controller with Exxon Enterprises, a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation responsible for new venture operations.
 Before that, Cavallo held financial management positions with KPMG Peat Marwick and General Foods. He holds a B.S. degree from New York University and an M.B.A. from Iona College.
 A&W Brands, Inc., headquartered in White Plains, N.Y., markets nine soft drinks in five categories. The brands include A&W Root Beer, diet A&W Root Beer, A&W Cream Soda, A&W diet Cream Soda, Squirt, Diet Squirt, Vernors, diet Vernors and Country Time Lemonade in ready-to-drink form.
