A SHIP repair company is in the running to secure a significant share of a pounds 200m Royal Navy contract just days after completing its latest re-fit.

The A&P group, which operates as A&P Tyne through its subsidiary in Hebburn, is a preferred bidder for the government contract alongside Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders of Birkenhead.

If negotiations are successful, work on the Naval support ships would be carried out between Hebburn and Falmouth, another of A&P's four sites in the United Kingdom, which also includes a site in Middlesbrough.

A&P, which set up in 1971, also plans to spend in excess of pounds 10m over the next three years on upgrading facilities throughout the group.
