, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1996--The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. announced today that net income for the 16-week first quarter ended June June: see month.  15, 1996 was $21,879,000 or $.57 per share compared with $14,550,000 or $.38 per share for the first quarter ended June 17, 1995, an increase of 50% over the prior year.

Sales for the quarter were $3,092,554,000 compared with $3,135,514,000 in the first quarter last year.
