A&P Announces Management Change in Canada.

MONTVALE, NJ--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 2000

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (NYSE:GAP) announced that Brian Piwek has been appointed Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of A&P Canada, reporting to Michael J. Larkin, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of A&P.

With the departure of Bill McEwan, President and Chief Merchandising Officer, who was recently appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of A&P's newly formed U.S. Atlantic Region, Mr. Piwek now assumes full responsibility for the Canadian operation.

A&P Canada operates 178 supermarkets and superstores in Ontario, under the A&P, Dominion, The Barn and Food Basics banners. The Company also franchises and supplies 63 stores under the Food Basics name. Its annualized sales volume is approximately $1.7 billion (American dollars).

Fueled over the past three years by a successful store development and renovation program, strategic acquisitions and strong marketing initiatives, the Canadian Company is generating a positive comparable store sales trend exceeding 6% year to date.

Christian Haub, President and Chief Executive Officer of A&P, said "Brian has been an integral part of the management team that has driven our revitalization and renewed success in Ontario. We look ahead to ongoing progress there as we move forward under his leadership."

Mr. Piwek was previously Vice Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Company. It was also announced that John P. Dunne has been appointed non-executive Chairman of A&P Canada. He was previously Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer.

"Since joining A&P in 1964, John has been involved in the management of virtually every major facet of the business, making invaluable contributions to our organization. He will continue to serve A&P with his experience and knowledge of our Canadian markets, working with the management team to keep our positive momentum on track," Mr. Haub said.
