"The membership of this task force represents the unique capabilities of Silicon Valley," said Congressman Honda. "For example, Krish Panu's leadership and expertise in location-based and wireless services as well as information technology infrastructure will be valuable assets in the development of innovative and practical recommendations to improve the security and convenience of air travel."

"The task force reflects the expertise and commitment of San Jose and Silicon Valley to help protect the nation's air travel system and the public," said Mayor Gonzales. "I have confidence that Krish Panu, along with the entire task force membership, will continue to lead the way in the development of creative and effective technology solutions for the air travel system."

"It is an honor to be selected by Congressman Honda and Mayor Gonzales to participate in the task force," said Krish Panu. "I look forward to working in partnership with other business leaders, technology experts and elected officials to develop innovative and effective air travel security and operations solutions."

The events of September 11 focused the nation on the need for greater security for aviation infrastructure and systems. Congress and the FAA have enacted broad new regulations for air travel safety, and all U.S. airports are required to implement an array of new security measures over the next three years.

The new federal aviation security law includes a key provision authored by Congressman Honda that will launch a nationwide pilot program in twenty or more U.S. airports to test new and emerging security technologies. The measure could dramatically improve airport security by promoting the development and use of cutting-edge technologies, such as global positioning system Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite.

and wireless applications, biometric authentication, enhanced communication systems and database integration protocols.

To ensure uniform and nationwide implementation of the new measures, the responsibility for airport security operations has been placed under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Security Administration in the U.S. Department of Transportation.
