store spokesman Henry Miller, almost 1,000 customers had entered the store by noon, forcing store employees to set up a makeshift rope line A rope line is a rope, often covered with velvet, that separates famous persons from a crowd. Only as other customers left the store were more being let in, he said.

The store, as the name implies, features a large selection of brand-name goods all priced at 99 cents. Popular sellers on opening day included such staples as batteries, cleaning supplies and Halloween candy.

``It's kind of embarrassing to be standing in line in a parking lot to get into a discount store,'' said Claire Nolan, a Simi Valley resident. ``But I might as well check it out. It will probably bring some life back to this shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into .''

And that is exactly what city officials are hoping for. Several stores in recent years have left the area, which has been targeted by the council as an important aspect of the city's development efforts.

But the larger implications of the store's opening were largely lost on the crowd of shoppers whose main goal was to save some money.

``There really are some bargains in there. When you've got a big family, every little bit helps,'' said shopper Joel Gray, who was wheeling away a shopping cart full of juice packs, paper products and school supplies.

According to store officials, the 99 Cents Only chain has 94 stores nationwide.
