91 Percent of European Radiologists Surveyed Believe the Detection of Breast Cancer Can be Improved Through the Use of Computer Aided Detection.

VIENNA, Austria--(BW HealthWire)--March 6, 2001

"CAD is the biggest step in the past 25 years for improving the

interpretation of mammograms," Leading European Physician Says

Every year, more than 135,000 women in the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the

European Community
are diagnosed with breast cancer and studies show that up to 20 percent of breast cancer could be detected earlier.

This may change with the widespread adoption of new technology, Computer Aided Detection (CAD), that is designed to assist radiologists to minimize false negative readings during mammogram mammogram /mam·mo·gram/ (mam´o-gram) a radiograph of the breast.

, The Netherlands, "Computer Aided Detection is the biggest step we have made in the past 25 years for improving the performance of radiologists in the interpretation of mammograms."

The survey, commissioned by R2 Technology, measured radiologists' knowledge and acceptance of CAD technology, specialized imaging software that identifies suspicious lesions on mammography mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  images by converting analog/film images to digital images. Conducted on March 3 and 4, the survey found that 91 percent of the respondents believe that CAD technology for mammography would be very or somewhat important to improving detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.

Eighty seven percent of the respondents said they would consider upgrading from film mammography to digital mammography digital mammography Imaging The capture of mammographic images on a digital grid Pros ↑ resolution and clarity than conventional mammography; DM is of use as a screening technique, and allows faster, earlier, and more accurate detection of early breast . However, when respondents recognized that CAD technology could improve detection accuracy, 60 percent said they would take CAD into consideration in making decisions on what type of system to purchase -- whether it be analog or digital mammography.

"The results of this survey are clear -- mammography remains the best method to detect breast cancer, but radiologists overwhelmingly believe that mammography can be optimized using new Computer Aided Detection technology," said Michael Klein, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. The role of CAD in improving film-based mammography or in enhancing detection rates for digital mammography is significant and we are pleased to be in a position to offer both options.

R2 Technology announced this week at the European Congress of Radiology meeting that over one million women in Europe, Asia and North America have had their mammograms interpreted with the aid of the ImageChecker(R), the first Computer Aided Detection System for mammography that assists radiologists to minimize false negative readings during mammogram screenings. Studies show that for every 100,000 cancers currently detected by screening mammography, the use of the ImageChecker could result in the early detection of up to an additional 20,500 breast cancer.
