AER Lingus Aer Lingus is Ireland's national airline. Based in Dublin, it operates 41 Airbus aircraft serving Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East. The airline is 28% owned by the Irish government; it was floated on the Dublin and London Stock Exchanges on 2 October 2006,  workers yesterday voted by a massive 90 per cent for strike action to protect 1,325 jobs set to be axed.

The SIPTU SIPTU Services, Industrial, Professional & Technical Trade Union (Ireland)  members are furious at the company, which is on course to make profits of pounds 100million this year.

The 3,993-strong workforce is now less than half of what it was a decade ago.

SIPTU secretary Michael Halpenny said: "Members have provided a ringing endorsement for the union position on the company's three-year plan.

"Members are clearly saying there can be no new plan for the future of the company without their involvement and agreement.

"The union's 2,400 members voted by over 90 per cent to take action if necessary in defence of their jobs.

"No convincing case has been made by management for the 1,325 job cuts they propose.

The union is furious that the National Carrier decided to make the massive cuts despite the workforce turning around company profits over the past few years.

Mr Halpenny added: "Time and again SIPTU members have shown themselves able and willing to embrace change in order to protect the airline, but we are not in the business of promoting other agendas."
