900,000 bulbs will be planted across district.

Byline: JOANNE DOUGLAS

AROUND 900,000 bulbs are being planted in and around the town this week.

The planting will give the town a carpet of colour when they spring into bloom next year.

Council officials are planting more than 700,000 purple crocus, 178,000 yellow daffodils and nearly 3,000 snowdrops.

And they are using a planting machine specially shipped from Holland which is being used by many local authorities.

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said: "The bulb bulb, thickened, fleshy plant bud, usually formed under the surface of the soil, which carries the plant over from one blooming season to another. It may have many fleshy layers (as in the onion and hyacinth) or thin dry scales (as in some lilies)—both of which  planting programme is funded through a number of sources including Kirklees in Bloom, area committees, towns and village centres improvement schemes, tenants and residents associations, neighbourhood management and parks and open spaces development."

Most of the bulbs will go on sites next to roads into Kirklees.

Some will be planted in sites such as Knowl Park in Mirfield, Thurstonland Recreation Ground, Jim Lane See also Jim Lane (Microsoft)

And as part of the council's regeneration Regeneration (biology)

of Fieldhead Estate in Birstall, some 99,000 bulbs are being planted there.

They will also be added to Huddersfield town centre while the ring road grass verge behind Huddersfield Bus Station will be planted with three varieties of longer-flowering bulbs.

The planting, which will take three days, is being done later than normal because of the recent dry weather which made the ground too hard for the machine.

The machine plants at a rate of 150 crocuses per metre and 80 daffodils per metre.
