9-YEAR-OLD TO PLAY LEAD ROLE IN `ANNIE'.

Calabasas resident Jacqueline Rosenthal will play the lead in the stage play ``Annie'' on Jan. 20 and 21, presented by the Golden Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre.  at the Canoga Park High School Canoga Park High School is a public school located in Canoga Park in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California, USA, within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In real life, the 9-year-old is no orphan. Parents Jan and Michael Rosenthal aren't sure just where Jacqueline gets her talent. ``Neither one of us can sing or act,'' Jan Rosenthal Jan Rosenthal (born April 7, 1986) is a German footballer, currently with Bundesliga side Hannover 96.

Rosenthal began his professional career with Hannover 96 in 2005, on a 5 year deal, but had to wait until August 13, 2006 before he made his first Bundesliga appearance, as

The mother of two didn't seem to grasp the extent of her daughter's abilities when she first performed in school plays.

``People kept telling me she had so much talent, but I held back for a long time until I realized . . ., why fight it! This is what she wants. Since then, she has taken off,'' Jan Rosenthal said. ``She has explored the singing on her own and she finds opportunities.''

The Calabasas youngster won the National Association of Teachers of Singing The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) was founded in 1944 and is now the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. Today NATS boasts more than 6,500 members in the United States, Canada, and over twenty-five other countries around the world, including  competition recently at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , for her performance in ``Broadway Baby.''

``Jacqueline can't really relate to the more mature themes in many of the songs she sings, so she works with them so they will have meaning for her. In one of her recent performances, she sang 'Memories' from the stage play `Cats.' Jacqueline has a lot of emotion when she sings, so she said she thought about her 89-year-old grandmother (Fay Yohay a Sherman Oaks resident) and how she might feel if she could be young again,'' Jan Rosenthal said.

Jacqueline receives training from vocal coach A vocal coach is a person, who works with singers on their singing technique, care and development of the voice, performance and preparation of a work. Brendan Rosenthal, Jacqueline's 6-year-old brother, will make his debut in the production of ``Annie'' as one of the assistant dog catchers.

``He is only 6, but he wanted to go to rehearsals with her and Ted Goldenberg (the show's director) said he noticed that Brendan was memorizing all of the lines. He said he thought in spite of Brendan's age, he could do it,'' said Jan Rosenthal.

Other achievements for the 9-year-old include performances in ``The Music Man,'' ``Anything Goes,'' ``42nd Street,'' ``Guys and Dolls For the 1950s musical, see .

The Golden Performing Arts Center, where ``Annie'' will be performed, is owned by Ted Goldenberg and Shelli Miller, who hope to increase self-esteem in their students through the theater experience and to create an atmosphere of friendship, encouragement and fun.

West Hills nonprofit is funded through tuition and theater ticket sales.

Woodland Hills resident Katie Kaufman and Shiloh Roberts from Valencia competed in the World Tap Championships held in Riesa, Germany, and have returned from Europe with a silver medal for their tap dancing talent.

The students who take lessons at the Great American Dance Factory in Chatsworth won the medal as a duo in the competition sponsored by the nonprofit International Dance Organization. The group is officially recognized by the Olympic Committee, said Kathleen Downey, the girls' tap teacher.

Katie also qualified in the world competition, earning fifth place in the soloist division.

The foundation raises funds for equipment, medical education and renovations to the hospital.
