9/11 memorial team chosen to create Hoboken tribute.

The FLOW Group, a team of five award-winning professionals from the fields of art, architecture, engineering, and lighting design, has been chosen by the Hoboken September 11th Memorial Fund to design the permanent memorial for the city.

The selection of the FLOW Group marks the accomplishment of a key milestone in a process that began in December 2001, and meets the goal of selecting a world-class design team to construct a memorial honoring the 57 Hoboken residents who died on September 11, 2001.

Digital images of the concept are available for download at www.hoboken911.com.

"Hoboken Island" is the memorial concept submitted by the FLOW Group and selected by the Memorial Fund Committee.

The concept proposes a freestanding island on the Hudson River Hudson River

River, New York, U.S. Originating in the Adirondack Mountains and flowing for about 315 mi (507 km) to New York City, it was named for Henry Hudson, who explored it in 1609. Dutch settlement of the Hudson valley began in 1629.

with first-person-attributed accounts of the events of 9/11, including the experiences of Hoboken observers, neighbors, volunteers, medical-triage personnel, family members, and final words of those who persished. The first-person accounts will be selected in collaboration with the Hoboken community.

Located in the middle of the island will be a Tidal Well, a hole in the island's center around which will be a cast-glass Circle of Names where each of the 57 names of lost Hoboken residents will be inscribed. At night, the glass well and its water will be illuminated, making the island a visible symbol from Hoboken and Lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North .

"The initial idea for an island with a hole cut out of its center grew from my personal experience of irreparable loss after September 11th," said FLOW artist Janet Echelman.

"For Hoboken's memorial, I wanted to reconnect people with the longer cycles of nature. So when you look down into the island's center, you look directly into the belly of the Hudson, seeing your own reflection as part of the larger flow of a living river."

"Hoboken Island offers a place for rest and contemplation amidst unobstructed views of the former Towers and of Hoboken," said FLOW architect Jeanne Gang Jeanne Gang (b. 1964) is the founder and principal of the Chicago architecture firm Studio Gang. As the leader of the design team at Studio Gang, she focuses on materials, technology and sustainability in the innovative and award-winning work of the firm. , principal of Studio Gang Architects.

"We designed this with people in mind, using materials like wood and cast glass which are warm and invite you to touch them, and by providing plenty of places to rest."
