"In the war on terrorism Terrorist acts and the threat of Terrorism have occupied the various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. government for many years. The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, as amended by the usa patriot act , ordinary citizens find themselves on the front lines," said Al Gerosa, President of the Concrete Alliance, Inc. "The city's new building code should improve safety instead of cutting corners."

Skyscraper Safety founder, Sally Regenhard, with attending members of the advisory panel, John Calderon, AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture  and Kathleen A. Dunne P.E., R.A. and others were briefed on the Concrete Alliance's efforts to promote the use of cast-in-place reinforced concrete in high-rise structures as an alternative to steel construction.

Gerosa noted that even without code improvements many of the city's developers were using cast-in-place reinforced concrete for new high-rise construction because of its superior fire and blast performance.

"Even in steel-frame buildings, builders are using concrete cores to provide protection to elevators and stairwells." An eight-minute video produced by the Concrete Alliance, Inc., detailed the use of the two-day cycle in which a floor can be erected to high-rise structured every two days.

Explaining the two-day cycle to the group was Bob Ledwith, Local # 46 Metallic Lathers Union And Reinforcing Iron Workers, Business Manager & Financial Sec'y-Treas.

The technique, said Ledwith, requires a high degree of skill and close coordination between unions but is cost competitive with steel construction.

The Concrete Alliance, Inc., and Skyscraper Safety are holding meetings to coordinate a public information campaign to educate the general public about safety issues and what to look for before buying or renting space in high rise structures.
