8x8 Announces Broadband IP Telephony Interoperability with Netspeak and Motorola; Support for Simple Gateway Control Protocol and Emerging CableLabs PacketCable Initiative.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1998--8x8, Inc. (Nasdaq:EGHT), NetSpeak(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:NSPK NSPK Network Serial Port Kit ) and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:MOT) announced the interoperability of their Broadband Internet See broadband.  Telephony technologies.

These technologies are based upon a new protocol designed to bridge circuit-based public switched telephone networks (PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S. ) and Internet Protocol See Internet and TCP/IP.

This specification, called Simple Gateway Control Protocol (communications, protocol) Simple Gateway Control Protocol - (SGCP) An IETF work in progress, superseded by MGCP.  (SGCP (Simple Gateway Control Protocol) The first IP telephony protocol to use a master/slave relationship with a softswitch as the master. Proposed to the IETF by Christian Huitema, SGCP is simpler than H.323. See MGCP/MEGACO. ), is a component of the emerging PacketCable Interface Specification being defined by CableLabs. SGCP is also a core component of the recently announced Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP See MGCP/MEGACO.

The technologies being demonstrated together at this week's California Cable Television Association's Western Cable Show are 8x8's Packet Gateway, Motorola's MTA-1, and NetSpeak's Call Agent. Phone calls can be placed between the 8x8 and Motorola gateways using standard touch-tone telephones with the NetSpeak Call Agent routing the call across a broadband cable network. The three companies worked together to ensure interoperability and toll-quality audio. The 8x8 and Motorola gateways compress the audio down to 6.3kbps allowing for the most efficient use of bandwidth without any sacrifice of quality.

8x8, NetSpeak and Motorola have participated in the cooperative PacketCable effort to help CableLabs, its member companies and other vendors draft a specification for interoperable interface requirements. Products meeting these requirements would allow cable operators to use Internet Protocol (IP) technology to deliver telephone calls, video conferencing See videoconferencing.

"8x8 is pleased to have the opportunity to work with leading companies such as Motorola and NetSpeak to prove out the promise of Broadband Internet Telephony," said Mike Noonen, 8x8 vice president of business development. "We look forward to working with both companies to enable interoperable technologies Founded in 2003, Interoperable Technologies is a limited-liability company (LLC) working to create a "dual-mode" satellite radio receiver that is capable of accessing both services operating in North America.  and exciting services for cable operators entering the telephony market."

"Motorola is pleased to develop Internet telephony Another term for IP telephony and VoIP. In the late 1990s, some people made a distinction between Internet Telephony and VoIP: Internet telephony referred to voice over the public Internet, while VoIP referred to voice over private IP networks.  technologies that are interoperable with other PacketCable participants such as 8x8 and NetSpeak," said Robert Molnar, Motorola corporate vice president.

"Multi-vendor interoperability is crucial to the success of IP telephony The two-way transmission of voice over a packet-switched IP network, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The terms "IP telephony" and "voice over IP" (VoIP) are synonymous. ," said Keith Kelly, NetSpeak vice president of professional services. "This demonstration is an important milestone in the development of next-generation IP-based telecommunications services for cable providers interested in offering residential services."
