MOJAVE - BAE Systems BAE Systems

British manufacturer of aircraft, missiles, avionics, naval vessels, and other aerospace and defense products. BAE Systems was formed (1999) from the merger of British Aerospace (BAe) with Marconi Electronic Systems.
announced Wednesday that it will lay off 60 workers at its Mojave plant and 24 workers in Victorville as a result of the downturn in the aerospace industry.

The cuts, coupled with previously announced plans for job reductions, will reduce the Mojave work force from 332 workers to 175. The cuts will take effect Sept. 6.

``These additional cuts are the result of several issues, including the timing of the downturn in the industry,'' said company spokeswoman Dale Avery. ``Any worker laid off will receive a severance package A severance package is pay and benefits an employee receives when they leave employment at a company. In addition to the employee's remaining regular pay, it may include some of the following:
  • An additional payment based on months of service
 and job placement assistance.''

In July, BAE Systems announced the pending layoffs as the result of work winding down on a program to modernize the cockpits of KC-135 tanker aircraft. The contract, which began in spring 1999, will be completed in September.

Under the $50 million Pacer compass, radar and global positioning satellite contract, BAE Systems modified 279 KC-135 tankers for the Air Force. Workers in Mojave replaced dials and other cockpit indicators with multifunctional displays and new electronic controls.

The modifications are intended to extend the life of the aircraft, enhance safety and eliminate the need for a navigator.

Pacer CRAG is one of the major contracts BAE Systems works under at Mojave. The company also converts Vietnam-era F-4 jet fighters into target drones.

BAE Systems, formed by the merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems Marconi Electronic Systems (MES), or GEC-Marconi as it was until 1998, was the defence arm of The General Electric Company (GEC). It was demerged from GEC and acquired by British Aerospace (BAe) on November 30 1999 to form BAE Systems. GEC then renamed itself Marconi plc.  in 1999, is a global aerospace giant, employing more than 100,000 workers around the world. The company has annual sales of $19 billion.
