 HARDY HOPES TO RAISE $300,000
EIGHTY FOUR, Pa., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Joe Hardy, founder and president of 84 Lumber Company, has issued a challenge to employees and customers of 84 Lumber in the hopes of raising at least $300,000 to aid hurricane victims in Florida and Louisiana, it was announced today.
Hardy will match all cash donations brought to an 84 Lumber store during the months of September and October, up to a total contribution of $150,000. The company has 366 stores in 31 states.
All money will be distributed through the American Red Cross. People wishing to contribute to the fund should bring personal checks or money orders, payable to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, to their local 84 Lumber store or, they may send checks directly to 84 Lumber headquarters c/o Box 8484, Eighty Four, Pa. 15384, attn. American Red Cross. Cash donations will not be accepted.
"I am glad that I am able to help out some of the families who have been hardest hit by Hurricane Andrew," Hardy said. "Sometimes it takes a disaster like this to remind us of how much we have and how quickly it can all be taken away. I hope my gift will challenge others to share what they have to help these families get back on their feet," he said.
Hardy said the company is also planning to sponsor a series of free "do-it-yourself" workshops in both Florida and Louisiana to offer homeowners some pointers on basic repair jobs. The workshops, which will include demonstrations, are expected to begin in mid-to-late September, according to a company spokesperson.
"We can always count on Mr. Hardy to be right out in front when people are in need," said F. William Hughey, executive director of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Red Cross. "He was one of the first to come forward to help families during the Gulf crisis and after the Oakland, Calif., fire. Mr. Hardy truly exemplifies the caring spirit of the American Red Cross."
