8000 JOIN BATTLE TO SAVE BARROWLAND.. ..but it's Barras market that faces closure fears!

Byline: Donna Watson

THOUSANDS of music fans have joined an internet campaign to save the world famous Glasgow Barrowland gig venue - even though it's not under threat.

fans launched the campaign after a mix-up over plans to overhaul the neighbouring Barras market.

Traders at the Barras want to avoid the same fate as the recently shut down Paddy's Market Paddy's Markets is a commercial enterprise that has two large markets in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Paddy's markets are located in Haymarket and Flemington and specialise in the sale of fruit, vegetables, fish, clothes and giftware. .

But music fans picking up on reports of the proposals confused the Barras for the Barrowland Ballroom The Barrowlands (more properly The Barrowland Ballroom) is a major dance hall and concert venue in Glasgow, Scotland.

 concert venue.

Almost 9000 regulars have joined a Facebook group to save the building. But the group can't even get the venue's name right - it's called Save Glasgow Barrowlands.

Fans have posted messages criticising Glasgow City Council, despite the fact the local authority have no plans to shut the Barrowland and don't own it.

Travesty

One message read: "If Glasgow City Council are allowed to go through with this, it will be an absolute travesty."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "The Barrowland is a legendary music venue, one that performers and audiences regularly refer to as one of the world's best.

"We look forward to the continued success of this Glasgow institution."

The improvement proposals for the Barras include removing eyesores from the surrounding area and more work to drive out the criminal gangs and fake goods now synonymous with synonymous with

In raids last month, police seized suspected counterfeit goods worth pounds 2.5million. The gear included fake designer fashion, trainers and jewellery. Officers made 21 arrests and retrieved small quantities of drugs, as well as weapons.

Honest traders are concerned that if the Barras does not change it could go the same way as Paddy's Market. It was shut this year after many warnings about counterfeit goods, drugs and anti-social behaviour.

On the other hand, the Barrowland is often cited as one of the world's best music venues and remains a thriving business.

It came second in a poll to find the best small venues in Europe and was named the best venue in Britain by more than 60 bands questioned for Radio 1. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958 but the rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. Serial killer Bible John

The venue has played host to acts such as David Bowie, REM, Oasis, The Smiths, U2, Bob Dylan and Justin Timberlake.

Homegrown acts such as Travis, Deacon Blue, Simple Minds and The Proclaimers have also graced its stage.

The owners of the Barrowland couldn't be reached yesterday for comment.
