8 REGIONAL TEACHERS NAMED BEST IN COUNTY.Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer Eight teachers from the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, and Antelope valleys were among 61 instructors to be honored Friday as Los Angeles County's top educators. Superintendent Donald Ingwerson, the Los Angeles County schools chief, congratulated the gathering during the Teachers of the Year awards luncheon at the Sheraton Universal. They had previously been chosen the top instructors in their individual school districts. The annual recognition - which dates back to 1983 - is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Every year, a dozen teachers are selected to represent Los Angeles County in the California Teacher of the Year competition. The California winner, in turn, participates in the national Teacher of the Year The National Teacher of the Year is a professional award in the United States. The program began in 1952, as a project by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and aims to reward excellence in teaching. It is sponsored by ING. program.
